Cafés and nightlife

It is thanks to a perfect union of hospitality, tradition, and entertainment that Forte dei Marmi has become a myth: the evenings stretching into nights at the Capannina, the events on the beach, the films of the golden age of Italian cinema, the music, and in general the summers of the “roaring Sixties” all contributed to making Forte dei Marmi the jewel in Versilia’s nightlife crown.

In 1929, Achille Franceschi had a revolutionary idea: to transform an old hut on the beach, used as a carpentry shop, into a bar serving drinks to the strains of gramophone music. It was an immediate success. And ever since the 1930s, La Capannina has been one of Forte dei Marmi’s top attractions. Famous personalities and such intellectuals as Leonida Repaci, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Eugenio Montale, Carlo Levi, Enrico Pea – and many others – were regulars. La Capannina was rebuilt in 1939, following a fire, but since then has not undergone significant modifications. It is, as it has always been, patronized by industrialists, movie stars, sports stars, and international jet-setters mixed up with young and older tourists on the lookout for good music. The nightspot is still managed by Gherardo Guidi and his wife Carla, owners of the property since 1977.
